Fairfax educator wins Virginia history teacher of the year honors

The Virginia Department of Education named Fairfax County’s Katie Blomquist as the state’s history teacher of the year.

A Sunrise Valley elementary fourth-grade teacher who specializes in Virginia history, Blomquist’s award includes $1,000 and new social studies materials for her classroom. She’s been at Sunrise Valley since 2006, and last year earned social studies teacher of the year award from the Virginia Council.

Manassas officials tap former Falls Church principal to lead Osbourn High School

City of Manassas school officials have selected Falls Church educator Cathy F. Benner to lead the city’s sole high school, officials announced last week.

Benner has been principal at Falls Church High School since 2008. She began her career teaching social studies in Hopewell, Va., and then moved to Fauquier County schools from 1984 to 1999, according to a news release. Prior to Falls Church, Benner served in an administrative position at Centreville High School.

New Hampshire 'neovoucher' program found unconstitutional

A judge in New Hampshire ruled Monday that a tuition tax-credit program that allows public money to be used for religious school education violates the state constitution.

Three groups — Americans United for Separation of Church and State, the New Hampshire Civil Liberties Union and the American Civil Liberties Union — had challenged the state's new Education Tax Credit Program by suingon behalf of nine plaintiffs.

Virginia schools to hire more school resource officers in response to Sandy Hook

More than 40 Virginia schools will have school resource officers next school year, thanks to new state grants announced Monday.

The schools, which are currently not staffed by any law enforcement officers, are amping up their security in response to the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut.
