Antiabortion student group now allowed at Johns Hopkins University
The Johns Hopkins University Student Government Association’s judiciary arm has overturned a March decision by the student-run senate to deny “official group status” to Voice for Life, an antiabortion advocacy and awareness group.

I recently wrote a post about a Tennessee state senator who has advanced legislation that would cut welfare payments to families whose kids get really bad report cards and test scores.
The senator is Stacey Campfield, a Republican, who was quoted in the Knoxville News Sentinel as saying this was a great way to "break the cycle of poverty."

Neighborhood preference in D.C. charter schools would be allowed under bill
New D.C. public charter schools would be allowed to give admissions preference to neighborhood children under a bill introduced Tuesday by D.C. Council Member David Grosso (I-At Large).
Charter schools currently enroll kids from across the city, holding lotteries if there is more demand than space. That approach gives students equal access to admission — but it can also shut them out of the school down the street.

A Damascus High School student says she was “harassed and intimidated by teachers and an assistant principal for refusing to stand” during the Pledge of Allegiance.
Tenth-grader Enidris Siurano-Rodriguez said she was sent to the assistant principal’s office on April 4 for not taking part in the Pledge of Allegiance, according to the ACLU of Maryland, which is representing the family.

An advocacy group focused on bringing healthier meals to Fairfax County students has won a $25,000 grant to help improve school meal nutrition.
Real Food for Kids, a Fairfax-based organization founded by school parents, received the grant from the Myles D. and Faye J. Sampson foundation. The money will fund Real Food for Kids events and programs for a year, according to the group.
