Discover Houston
Times: 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. and 11:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Cost: $40
Board a deluxe motorcoach for a tour of the many diverse and exciting places that make Houston special. Learn about Houston’s past, the present and plans for the future. Highlights include the world famous Texas Medical Center, the Museum District, Reliant Stadium and other sports venues, the Galleria, downtown Houston and much more. Lunch on your own.
Space Center Houston
Time: 8:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Cost $40, includes lunch
Learn about the history and the future of space exploration with a visit to the official visitor center of the Johnson Space Center. Explore at your own pace. Take the NASA Tram Tour to historic Mission Control and other interesting NASA facilities. Teacher information packets will be provided to all tour guests. A box lunch is included.
Rounding Up Texas History
Time: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Cost $60, includes lunch
Relive the sights and sounds of 100 years of Texas history at the George Ranch Historical Park. Travel through time at this living history museum. Guides in period costumes invite guests to visit the Jones family homes and watch demonstrations about ranch life in Texas. Enjoy a BBQ lunch in one of the historical ranch buildings or, weather permitting, “under the old oak trees”.
San Jacinto Monument
Times: 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Cost $40
Walk the battlefield where Texas won her independence from Mexico. Enjoy the “Texas Forever” presentation and museums. Views from the observation deck of the San Jacinto Monument, the tallest in Texas, include the downtown skyline, Houston Ship Channel and Battleship Texas. Enjoy a snack and beverages on the grounds of this important place in Texas history.
Downtown Houston Walk & Rail Tour (sponsored by the Geography Community)
Time: 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Cost $13 + $2 for MetroRail ticket
This 3-hour stroll-ride tour in downtown Houston includes something for everyone. You will stroll through downtown historic and modern architectural treasures, Discovery Green Park, the tunnel system, and San Houston Park (see early days of Houston architecture). Your trip will continue with a stop at the highest sky lobby in Texas for a spectacular view and at the Visitors Center to view a film. The short round trip ride on MetroRail ($2 ticket to be purchased during the tour) will give you the opportunity to see The Museum District.
Teaching American Indian History, Culture, and Current Events Community Tour of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
Time: 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Cost $10 + $2 for MetroRail ticket
Discover hos the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston can enrich your teaching. Tour the MFAH collection of Pre-Columbian, American, and Native America art. Discuss strategies to connect landscape paintings, kachina dolls, and pottery to subjects such as tradition, relocation, and representation of Native Americans. Community members will be available to share suggestions on connecting art to various social studies disciplines. Following you time in the galleries, visit the Kinder Foundation Teacher Resource Center, a free lending library for educators. Examine a variety of poster sets, videos, and DVDs that feature Native American art and culture. Light refreshments and time to explore the museum on your own will be included int his excursion. Travel by MetroRail to and from the museum ($2 ticket to be purchased during the tour).
George Bush Presidential Library and Museum
Time: 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 p.m. Cost $72, includes lunch
The Bush library, located on the campus of Texas A & M University in College Station, depicts George Bush’s life and presidency through artifacts, film, photographs and personal recollections. The museum recently celebrated its Tenth Anniversary. Lunch is included at Café Eccell, a popular local restaurant near the A & M campus.
