NCSS Operations Committees

The call for committee members is currently open!

NCSS Operations Committees are made up of volunteers who carry out board-mandated operations, duties, and policies, as well as many of the necessary business and organizational functions of NCSS. Operations committees relate their work to Board directives, the long-range plan of NCSS, and the leadership theme of the year set by the Board. They make recommendations to the board and provide advice.

Award and Grant Selection Committees

The call for award and grant selection committee members is currently open!

The selection committees are made up of volunteers who review nominations and select recipients of NCSS awards and grants. Committee members serve a three-year term and most committee work is accomplished online or by telephone. Members are also asked to make a reasonable effort to attend the award winner session, awards presentation, and assist the committee chair when need arises during the review or at the NCSS Annual Conference.

National Rho Kappa Advisory Council

The call for applications is currently open!

Members of the Advisory Council must be full-time middle school or high school teachers whose primary teaching responsibilities are in the field of social studies. Serving member responsibilities include:

  • Disseminating information to local chapters in your region;
  • Encouraging and stimulating active chapters;
  • Promoting the formation of new chapters; and
  • Attending one in-person meeting that takes place each year at the NCSS Annual Conference.

Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People Review Committee

The Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People selection committee consists of 15 reviewers who are responsible for reviewing, evaluating, and selecting children's trade books for the annual bibliography "Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People." The "Notables" can contain 100-200 titles selected from as many as 800 books submitted by publishers each year. The list is published in the May/June issue of Social Education, and is also distributed separately by NCSS to members, and by the Children's Book Council.

Your Local, State, or Regional Council

NCSS is affiliated with and supports state, local, and regional social studies councils and organizations across the United States. Many of these groups have annual conferences and monitor state educational policies with regard to social studies.
